Urban Agriculture Programme at Schools

Agriculture

On this day, the 26th of July, United Way South Africa visited Ingqaizivele Secondary School in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni, to continue our initial Mandela Month campaign activities. Under our Income generation pillar, our flagship Urban Agriculture Programme (UAP) was the order of the day.

The school's food garden as can be seen, is massive and well taken care of by the Community Work Programme (CWP) group of dedicated men and women from same community, under the auspicies of City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).  Mr Sifiso Mefane CoE representative was in attendance to educate and promote Agriculture.

Mr. Mlungisi Maseko, a smallholder farmer from Essellen Park, also from Ekurhuleni, rejuvenated our spirits and shared his experiences of farming using innovate methods yet under shoe-string budget. He also specialises on selling seedlings that are already prepared, to generate income. 'It's important to start somewhere in this business. I am looking for crops to plant e.g, mustard spinach etc.' CoE has assisted him with a piece of land to farm. He also uses old tires to grow crops where land is a challenge.

Two Ingqaizivele Secondary School learners emphasised the importance of continuing the legacy of Mandela Day. The Principal mention that he has been working with the CWP group for 8 years now, and he trully appreciates their resilience and hard work with the work that  they do at the school's food gardens. He thanked UWSA for working with the school since 2018.

The school, however, urgently requires a Jojo Tank system as well as the water horsepipes, in order to continue to maintain the garden for the learners, community and other stakeholders -  the champions of Climate, Food and Solidarity.
